""Where the 156 GTA is really special is underneath, with huge effort going into its highly developed suspension. It will have wider wheel-tracks and a lower ride-height in pursuit of what Alfa calls ‘race car’ dynamics for the road. Even though the car is front-wheel drive, we are promised outstanding handling characteristics, pushing our idea of what is possible from front-wheel drive. The GTA will certainly need to be that good, with a whole raft of new drivers’ cars being released next year, including the Focus RS. But with the successful launch of the 147 underway, Alfa does seem to be on a roll at the moment, so expectations are high.
Other GTA Alfas will follow, including a 147 GTA, but probably not until 2002. The ‘GTA’ badge was most memorably fitted to the Giulia of the late ‘60s, a beautiful aluminium-bodied car with a special twin-plug head that was homologated so that the firm could go racing. Only a few were sold to the general public. """
