Sony PSX Entertainment Console

This stunning looking piece of kit is the new Sony PSX, and without doubt it's benefited from the input of the designers of Sony's top end consumer electronics range; the objective being to produce something that you'll be proud to sit in your home entertainment system alongside your surround sound amplifier and other high technology.

The PSX concept is a great one. Take a great product (in this case the PS2) and put it in a new wrapper, along with lots of other nice toys and you're guaranteed to sell them by the shipload. No matter that the PS2 is already in a sizeable percentage of households around the world - the discerning consumer of technology is going to buy this, rather than be left with the old style PS2 on the shelf.

To be fair, the extras are going to be substantial; we're not just looking at a new box here - it's a new box with some nice touches built into it, and that alone is going to save you some precious Scart sockets.

And in any case the PSX Console is a smart piece of kit. The buttons and Memory Stick "PlayStation" slots are hidden behind a pull down flap as are the Memory Card slots, like the minor controls on a good amplifier. You can access the latter with the remote control anyway. There's also a USB cable tucked away out of site too.

Other connections are at the rear of the machine, so you'll have to either leave the controllers plugged in, or reach round the back to remove them.
Hard Drive Video Recording

Those extra features include a whopping big hard drive on which you can record video at a range of different resolutions. (160MB in the PSX DESR-5000, or 250MB in the PSX-DESR-7000). Because the drives in both PSX machines are bigger than the disks in today's XBoxes, they're capable of half an hour and almost an hour of HQ (High Quality) Video recording respectively, and at standard resolutions (HSP) even the smaller of the two units can pack in a massive 51 hours of entertainment. This extends to over 200 hours at the lowest resolution (SLP) in the case of the smaller unit and 325 hours for the bigger one.

Often the thing that makes or breaks these devices is the quality of the EPG. We're betting that Sony will have ensured that this one has a good schedule manager to ensure that they don't trip up at this particular hurdle.
Other PSX Features

Both units will also play all popular DVD formats including DVD-R and DVD+RW including the DVD+VR system. They'll also accept Memory Sticks, Playstation CD-ROMs and regular CD-ROMS.

The Sony PSX is not expected to be launched in Europe and the USA before the end of 2004, despite the fact that it's already available in Japan. We're amazed that it's going to be such a long delay, though we figure there was no way they could launch it shortly after Christmas 2003 for fear that the public will refuse to buy any more PS2s with the new machine on the way.

Sony probably aren't making much on the PS2 these days, but they're determined to sell as many as possible, if only to prevent Microsoft gaining market share on them. In any case, every Sony PlayStation 2 that goes out the door is a guarantee of extra revenue from games sales.

We're convinced that this is going to be a winning piece of kit. The world may be waiting for PS3 with a faster processor to blast the XBox out of sight, but in the mean time demand for PSX will be high.

già vorrei comprare questa visto che la mia play dopo anni dionorato servizio [e qualche botta] incomincia a perdere i colpi ... e volevo sapere alemno se verrà commercializzata anche da noi
