Turn 10: “The Graphics Are Better in Forza 4 Because of Kinect”

Let’s not beat around the bush here, Kinect has its sceptics. There are its fans – those who are open to new experiences; and then there are the sceptics – those who are set in their controller based ways, but when we spoke to Turn 10 at Gamescom this week, they told us that even the sceptics are benefiting.

When talking about the graphical fidelity of Forza 4, Turn 10’s Creative Director, Dan Greenawalt, gave us an insight into the new lighting engine and then went on to say that “the graphics are better in Forza 4 because of Kinect.”

“You’re also seeing our new lighting model,” said Greenawalt, as he showed Forza 4 off to us behind-closed-doors at Gamescom this week. “We wanted to approach lighting in a new way so we actually worked with some guys we hired from Pixar as well as from Hollywood, and built a new lighting engine based on a technique called IBL: image based lighting.”

“In most games, including Forza 3, the object has one set of lighting instructions and the environment has another set of lighting instructions, so the math is different,” he continued. “We tuned it so it looked as close as we can, but they are different maths.”

“With IBL, the car is lit by the environment, so you get all that complex bounce lighting on the floor or the glean through a tree, it’s not just the reflection, it’s actually the lighting. Now, that’s the whole technical side, but what it all comes down to is the car looks seated – perfect – in the environment.”

“Now, we did all this to support Autovista which was to support Kinect, but once we did all this work it made its way into the rest of the game,” said Greenawalt. “It looks so much better now because of all the work that we had to learn about in order to deliver this mode.”

When asked whether Greenawalt thought Kinect had actually improved Forza’s core racing game as a result of its implementation, the Turn 10 Creative Director was adamant it had.

“It has, absolutely… I never thought that I’d be saying this but the graphics are better in Forza 4 because of Kinect, because it forced us to rethink some old problems – that we all deal with but we’ve all been doing them one way as an industry – we had to think of them in a new way.”

Even if you are a sceptic then, you’ll likely be getting a better deal in the future because of how developers are working with Kinect… well, that’s the case with Forza 4 anyway… So be bloody grateful!
