    Re: NFS Shift 2 Unleashed

un video del gioco in azione:

YouTube - Shift 2 Unleashed: Gameplay Video

Shift 2: We Own the Night

When I get behind the wheel at night in most racing games, it feels like little more than mood lighting. There's something cool about cars trading paint under the bright lights, but other than slightly lessening visibility, nighttime scenes don't offer much. Except in Shift 2 Unleashed, where driving in the dark becomes a unique challenge.

Every track in Shift 2 can be played at night, but some of the tracks are out in the middle of nowhere, with very little lighting. The track is pitch black, except for what's illuminated by your headlights.

Because there's so little lighting, your competitors become your allies. They can light the way with their headlights to give a clearer view of the road ahead. I found this interesting strategy of purposefully staying a few cars back so I could watch the taillights of the AI drivers and read the course by their movements. I've never experienced something like this in a racing game before and it's enough to make Shift 2 noteworthy.

I'm conditioned on the rules of the virtual road. In racing games, bumping other cars isn't just a natural occurrence, it's a way to sometimes save yourself when misjudging a turn. Cut inside another driver, turn and if you go wide, you nudge them and avoid going off the track and really killing your speed. That tactic totally screwed me in Shift 2.

It's not usually easy to make it through a long, tough race with aggressive AI and come away with both headlights intact in almost any racing game. When I lost my headlights in a night race in Shift 2, I doubled the difficulty. It's hard enough to see the track with my headlights on. Once I lost those, I couldn't see the turns ahead. My former strategy of following other cars went from "cool idea" to "necessity." Without the other drivers, I'd easily miss a turn, hit a median, even get lost.

Combine this with the new helmet camera -- which brilliantly replicates a driver's head movements -- and night racing becomes almost tangible. Forget trying to win the race, just trying to survive without headlights was tense enough.

I honestly don't know if the rest of Shift 2 can equal the night track experience, but if it does, we might not be snickering at EA's boast of taking down Forza and Gran Turismo. What I can promise is that when the sun goes down in Shift 2, it's not just a cheap visual stunt. The dark has a significant impact on gameplay. Other racing game developers should take notice -- this is how you own the night.

Fear and Focus in Shift 2 Unleashed

"In the 1971 film Le Mans, Steve McQueen plays an aging racing driver named Delaney who's been riding the edge for a bit too long. After a nasty crash the previous year, he's back, a bit broken, at the famous endurance race to try again. Aside from a few snippets of dialogue and some intense staring contests between McQueen and the rest of the cast, there isn't much exposition. Instead, the story is told chiefly through engine noise, track dust, shredded tires, crowd reaction and zipping images of the French countryside. Like the sport it chronicles, Le Mans is a film that demands your focus at every turn.

There's a drama to racing that video games have so far failed to capture. Even when they blow us away with their realistic tire physics (Forza Motorsport 3), spam us with beautifully reproduced cars (Gran Turismo 5) and smother us in style (Grid), racing games tend to be about everything but the actual feeling of driving a car at realistically ridiculous speeds for a living.

Shift Unleashed 2 is a step by Electronic Arts and developer Slightly Mad Studios toward whittling away at that problem. The sequel to 2009's Need For Speed: Shift, it straddles the line between realistic racing simulator and just-for-fun thrill ride. If you like, you can treat it like an arcade-style romp through a series of stages meant to mimic a racing career. Bump the difficulty level down, ramp up the driving assists, and you get all the joy of whipping expensive race cars around Monza without crashing into every guardrail. But that's not really racing, now is it?

Shift 2 retains some of the most popular elements of its predecessor – experience points, leveling, badges for performance, visceral driver/track interaction – and piles on the realism. There's now a full Elite simulation mode that nips at the heels of Forza and Gran Turismo. Full damage is now available, allowing for race-ending crashes. Debris will litter the road after a wreck, and you can shred a tire if you're already worn too thin. The physics are improved, the artificial intelligence is smarter and there are stat meters, upgrades and tweaks galore. All these changes blend to form a mystical connection between car and driver. But Shift 2's true innovation is the helmet cam, an optional point-of-view that disconnects the driver's perspective from the body of the car and simulates a real head on a real neck.

Like throwing a bundle of steel and carbon fiber around a racetrack at 200 mph, the Shift 2 helmet cam is not for everyone. It's different. It's scary. It takes some getting used to. It bounces around. It forces you to pay attention. And it's the closest I've come to feeling the virtual fear of driving fast. The helmet cam isn't just a change in perspective. When you're nearing a turn, the camera gently looks toward the apex, pulling your field of vision into the right racing line. Once you're there, it reorients to straight ahead in the exit. The cam also blurs your vision at the edges as you reach high speeds, simulating the tunnel vision effect racers feel on the track. It's exciting, but it's a thrill that blinds you. While you're grinning at your speedometer, someone could be overtaking you. Focus.

I've only played about an hour of Shift 2's career mode, so I can't make a judgment about the final game yet. But what I've seen made me want to grab the game and lock myself in a room. In the final minutes of Le Mans, McQueen's character tries to explain to his love interest why he risks his life to drive faster than everyone else.

"When you're racing, it's life," he says. "Anything that happens before or after is just waiting."

I'll be playing more Shift 2 in the weeks ahead, and I'll be curious to see if it can truly tap into the experience of racing to live. That's a tall order for a video game, but it's worth aspiring to."

Shift 2 is a "Racing Simulator," Not a "Driving Simulation Experience" Says the Game's Producer

The original Shift was an interesting game. Loved by some, hated by others, and tolerated by us - it was decent; nothing more, nothing less. So when Shift 2 was announced, those who loved the original were over the moon, those who hated it rolled their eyes, and others, like us, were just glad they at least did the right thing and ditched the Need For Speed moniker.

While down in EA's UK offices recently, we caught up with Shift 2 Unleashed's Producer, Jesse Abney, to see what they had in store for us with the sequel; a game which Abney labels as a "racing simulator," unlike Forza and GT5 which are "driving simulation experiences." There is a difference... apparently. With night-time racing promised, a much more varied career and more, we get the detailed lowdown on what fans can expect this coming March.

            Re: NFS Shift 2 Unleashed

bhe', no, hotpursuit e' uscito nel 2010.

cmq sono due le software house che sviluppano gli nfs... una si occupa della versione "casualona/arcade", l'altra di una versione piu' "seria".

resta il fatto che l'imminente tdu2 e' molto piu' nfs che non questo filone di shift...
